Security
A Security Chip (TPM)* Protects Data from External Attacks *The system settings must be made to use the security chip (TPM).
You can carry out all key operations for security and privacy protection, such as encrypting files and storing the encryption key, separately from other hardware or operating systems. Enhancing security in this way also provides the reliability of the Encrypting File System (EFS), e-mail encryption, and digital signatures.
Security Chip (TPM)
TPM (Trusted Platform Module) is a security chip that holds your encryption key for security and privacy protection. TPM supports the specifications established by the Trusted Computing Group (TCG), which promotes security standardization.
Conventional PCs
The encrypted data and the encryption key for decrypting the data are stored on the same hard disk. If someone steals the hard disk or simply accesses the hard disk data, the data in the hard disk may be read and used.
Computer with an Integrated Security Chip (TPM)
The data is stored on the hard disk while the encryption key is stored separately in the security chip. Even if the hard disk is stolen or lost, the encryption key for reading the hard disk data cannot be accessed.
If the Computer is Dismantled...

Even if the hard disk is removed and connected to another computer, the encrypted data cannot be easily read, because the encryption key in the security chip cannot be accessed.
Easy-to-Use Security Functions
Protected from Unauthorized Use
You can specify a long password phrase that is easy to remember and difficult to decrypt. A simple security function can also be provided by using an SD Memory Card*.
Boot Control (BIOS Password)

Windows cannot be booted unless a specific SD Memory Card* is inserted or the password is entered, so the notebook is protected from unauthorized use. Passwords can consist of up to 32 characters, which allows about 4.3 billion possible combinations.
Windows Log-on Control

You can specify accessible applications and the access right for each user by recording the user ID, password, and other data onto an SD Memory card*. This prevents the danger of someone remembering your password by watching you enter it.
*The SD Memory Card is optional.
Protected from Theft
Hard Disk Protection and PC Theft Prevention
There is a lot of valuable data stored in the hard disk of the mobile notebooks that people carry around. TOUGHBOOK has a system for preventing data theft even if the notebook is stolen or disposed of.
Hard Disk Protection
You can specify a password for accessing the hard disk. Even if someone removes the hard disk and connects it to another computer, the data cannot be accessed without the password.
Security Slot for Theft Prevention
Notebook computers are subject to being stolen not only when outdoors or in the car. To protect yourself from theft in the office, TOUGHBOOK offers a strong lock system that lets you actually lock it to your desk.
*The Kensington Slim Microsaver, a security lock that was used for testing the security of the TOUGHBOOK, is recommended. However, using a security lock or security cable still does not guarantee protection against theft.
Protected from Unauthorized Reading
Hard Disk Data Erase Utility Ensures Safety When Loaning or Disposing of the Notebook
Even when you delete data by throwing it in the Recycle Bin, or use software to format the disk, the data is merely hidden and remaining. This data faces the danger of being read by special software.
Hard Disk Data Erase Utility

Special software makes all of the data stored in the hard disk unreadable. You can use this software easily to minimize the danger of data being stolen when you dispose of the notebook.
