Tests That Meet Standards Set by the U.S. Department of Defense

Free Fall Test (in Non-Operating Mode)

Notebooks PCs are sequentially dropped onto each face, edge and corner for a total of 26 drops from a height of 90 cm (35 in).

MIL-STD-810F 516.5 A performance test adopted by the U.S. Department of Defense to assess military equipment suitability

  • Drop Height: 900 mm (CF-19)
  • Drop Surface and Direction: (On Plywood) Dropped onto each face, edge and corner for a total of 26 drops. (On Concrete) Dropped onto each face for a total of 6 drops.
  • Number of Drops: Dropped once in each direction.
  • Final Examination: Notebook PCs are visually inspected and electrical and mechanical functional checks were performed according to the requirements of product specifications. However, changes in appearance, such as flaking of the coating at the part of impact, were not counted.

Water Resistance Test (in Non-Operating Mode)

Water is continuously splashed onto the notebook PC from all directions.

IEC60529/JIS C0920 IPX4 (Water Resistance) (MIL-STD- 810F506.4-III (Drip) Level) A JIS standard for testing the degree of water resistance

  • The water resistance test involved sprinkling 0.07l/min 5% of water from each sprinkler hole at 180 degrees from a vertical angle, from a maximum distance of 200 mm for 1 hour (the IEC standard states 10 minutes). This is equivalent to precipitation of 10 mm/min.
  • Final Examination: Notebook PCs are inspected for any damage by the test.

Typing Test (in Operating Mode)

Each key of the notebook PC was tested by being typed two million to five million times.

  • Number of Typing Cycles (Lifespan): Two million to five million times
  • Typing Speed: Four times/second
  • Load Direction: Vertically on the keytop center

Dust-Resistance Test (in Operating Mode)

Tiny particles were continuously sprayed for 8 hours onto the notebook PC in operating mode.

IEC60529/JIS C0920 IP5X (Dust Resistance) A JIS standard for testing the degree of dust resistance

  • Dust Type: Talcum powder
  • Dust Density: 2 kg/m3
  • Test Temperature: 15 to 35 degrees centigrade
  • Test Humidity: 25 to 75%
  • Test Duration: 8 hours
  • We checked that the notebook PC was not damaged by the test.
  • Final Examination: Notebook PCs are visually inspected and electrical and mechanical functional checks were performed according to the requirements of product specifications.

Vibration Test (in Non-Operating Mode)

The notebook PC was subjected to vibration for 1 hour at each of its longitudinal, lateral, and vertical axes.

MIL-STD-810F 514.5 Category 24 A performance test adopted by the U.S. Department of Defense to assess military equipment suitability

  • The test simulated assumed vibrations when carrying the notebook around PC by hand, or when driving with the notebook PC.
  • Test Environment: 20 Hz to 1,000 Hz 0.04G2/Hz: 1,000 Hz to 2,000 Hz-6db/Octave: 1 hour/axis (longitudinal, lateral, and vertical axes)

JIS = Japanese Industrial Standards, MIL = Military Specifications and Standards

*Note that these shock-, vibration-, salt-, dust-, and water-resistant properties do not guarantee full protection of the notebook PC from damage or malfunction.
